Cindy Lacey

Cindy has been a 7th grade teacher at the West Valley Middle Level Campus in Yakima, WA, West Valley School District #208 for 20 years.  She teaches a self-contained Inquiry Level Humanities class integrating Language Arts and Social Studies for Highly Capable Students.  She also teaches 7th grade Language Arts and Social Studies classes for mixed ability students.

Cindy graduated from the University of Florida with a BS in Agriculture and worked as a biologist for the USDA in Florida and then at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD..  During that time she authored and co-authored several scientific papers in the field of biological control of medically important insects.  Her next adventure took Cindy and family to Portugal and France for seven years.  Repatriating in 1996, Cindy earned a BA in Elementary and Special Education, followed by an MA in Middle Level Writing, at Central Washington University.  In 2013, Cindy completed a Special Endorsement in Teaching the Gifted from Whitworth University.  In 2017 Cindy became a National Board Certified Teacher in Early Adolescent English Language Arts.

This varied background led to 15 years of collaboration with the 7th grade science teacher of highly capable students to support the research and technical writing aspects of their independent research projects.  Inquiry research, reporting, and presentation skills are the primary focus of all of the Social Studies classes Cindy teaches.  In Language Arts, she supports students in exploring a variety of genres of literature, moving outside of their reading comfort zones, participating in academic discussions, and finding their own voice in literary writing.
