WAETAG Webinar Series: Academic Acceleration

Academic Acceleration: An Introduction

Guest Speaker: Ann Lupkowski-Shoplik, Ph.D.

Webinar Description:
What is academic acceleration and who might benefit? Acceleration has the most research support of any educational programming option for academically talented (gifted) students, yet it is not used often, because many educators have not had the opportunity to learn about it. We also worry about the social impact of moving a student up. Research tells us that acceleration is an excellent option to consider for many talented students. There are over 20 forms of acceleration from which to choose, and these can be divided into the broad categories of whole-grade acceleration and subject acceleration. We will focus on issues around subject acceleration and consider various approaches to the logistical challenges presented by moving ahead in a single subject. Taking a team approach helps us consider the potential impact of subject acceleration on educational planning for the student. Several tools are available to help educators make objective, informed decisions. Bring your questions about acceleration to this session.
